Boil the ocean
Refers to attempting a task that is overly ambitious, complex, or impossible to achieve with the resources and time available. It may also refer to a project that is so vast in scope that it cannot be completed within a reasonable timeframe. Boiling the ocean is a common pitfall in business, as it can lead to wasted time, resources, and energy, without achieving meaningful results. Effective project management involves breaking down complex tasks into manageable parts and focusing on achievable goals.
In business coaching, a coach may advise against “boiling the ocean” when helping a client plan and execute projects. For example, if a client is launching a new product, the coach may advise against trying to target every possible customer segment or marketing channel at once. Instead, the coach may recommend focusing on a few key segments or channels and testing their effectiveness before expanding further. By avoiding the “boil the ocean” mentality and focusing on achievable goals, the client can avoid overwhelming themselves or their team and achieve meaningful progress toward their objectives.
